You want the best sunscreen… but with dozens of options, how do you choose? There are basically two types of sunscreen …
Chemical sunscreens contain chemicals that absorb the rays of the sun.
Mineral sunscreens rely on natural minerals, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, to form a physical barrier between the sun’s rays and the skin.
A natural, mineral-based sunscreen works equally as well as a chemical sunscreen. In addition, a natural sunscreen is often less irritating than a chemically-based product. Zinc oxide, a common mineral used in natural sunscreens, has provided protection from the sun for decades.
The best sunscreen has “broad spectrum” protection. It shields the skin from both …
UVB rays (Ultraviolet B). Blame these invisible rays for a painful sunburn. They are responsible for basal and squamous cancers of the skin, in addition to the more deadly melanoma. Also you can read about “before and after aging lips” here
UVA rays (Ultraviolet A). These cause unsightly wrinkling and age spots. They penetrate your skin deeply and give it that “leathery” look. More importantly, studies now indicate UVA worsens UVB’s cancer causing abilities. It may also directly cause skin cancer, including melanoma.
When looking for the best sunscreen, opt for one that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. The label might indicate this as “broad spectrum” protection.
Note: Currently there are no federal regulations in the United States as to what actually constitutes adequate protection from UVA and UVB rays. Also, no sunscreen offers 100% protection.
Sunscreen protection is measured by the SPF (Sun Protection Factor). Choose an SPF of 15 or higher. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, while SPF 30 blocks approximately 97%.
All Natural Sunscreen
There are several brands of natural suncreen on the market.
Aubrey Organics contains PABA. This is a natural form of PABA, but be aware that some people are sensitive to PABA. Do a skin test before using to be sure you have no reaction.
Dr. Hauschka contains titanium dioxide.
Lavera uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
UV Naturalscontains zinc oxide.
Keep in mind that not even the best sunscreen will provide total protection from the harmful rays of the sun! Follow these guidelines for safe sun protection:
Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as much as possible
