Today, New York City indie rocker YUZIMA is dropping his new music video “Madame Laveau” with a tweeted announcement yesterday. “Madame Laveau” is an accompanying video for the BASH {Insta-Album} his new release – out Oct 7.

Early this summer Yuzima made his first pilgrimage to New Orleans to immerse himself in the local music vibe and research the life of the legendary nineteenth century Voodoo goddess Marie Catherine Laveau. The musical energy of the French Quarter became immediately apparent with a week learning to Second Line (jazz band march) and nightly visits through the quarter in the repressive summer heat and humidity. The reggae-ish pop-rock tune references events in the life of Madame Laveau. Her life is shrouded in mystery. She was very influential and is reputed to have paid off and threatened servants of her rich clients for intimate information, which led to the lyric “she’s got spies in your house”. The video celebrates the unusual connection between Catholicism and Voodoo – a contradiction in her life, suggests the mysticism of both, and the importance of water and fire in both belief systems. Yuzima worked with New York photographer Jim Fairfax to create a contemporary scrubbed visual suggestive of nineteenth century New Orleans.

Marie Laveau seems to be having a pop culture moment in the upcoming season ofAmerican Horror Story – Angela Basset will be playing the role of Madame Laveau, andNCSI New Orleans.

The “Madame Laveau” music video is exclusively available for screening on YouTube and will be included in the extras in the packaging for Bash {Insta-Album} out Oct 7 (1st single “Bash” is on SoundCloud).
