Well Strung: All Male String Quartet Have Quite the Sex Appeal & Good with Their Fingers: Videos



One Direction step aside, there’s a new kind of boy band on the circuit. The all-male string quartet Well-Strung features classical musicians who sing putting their own spin on the music of Mozart, Vivaldi, Rihanna, Adele Lady Gaga, and more! Their debut show sold-out Joe’s Pub on May 1st, 2012 in New York after being workshopped at Ars Nova NYC in February.


Well-Strung stars first violinist Edmund Bagnell, second violinist Christopher Marchant, cellist Daniel Shevlin and violist Trevor Wadleigh. Well-Strung’s debut show is directed and co-written by Donna Drake and playing all summer in Provincetown, MA at The Art House. The quartet was formed by producer/manager Mark Cortale and Christopher Marchant .

Edmund Bagnell (first violinist) played Tobias in the first national tour of Sweeney Todd directed by John Doyle. Recent credits include Toby in Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium starring Varla Jean Merman (The Art House in Provincetown), Charlie Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Summer Theater of New Canaan), Charlie in The Big Holiday Broadcast of 1959 written by Joanna Gleason (Fairfield Theater Company), and Oramel Howland in The Great Unknown written by Jim Wann (Pump Boys and Dinettes) and Bill Hauptman (Big River) as a part of NYMF.

Chris Marchant (second violinist) is grew up singing and playing violin, but was not involved with theatre until he graduated Malone University in Canton, OH. Since then, he has been involved in a number of productions using his talents as a vocalist, actor, and musician. Favorite productions include Tobias (Sweeney Todd, nat’l tour), violinist (Spring Awakening nat’l tour), Dennis (Sanders Family Christmas), and Provincetown’s Naked Boys Singing.

Member Meet: Christopher Marchant- a gay violinist living in New York City. Christopher seems to be getting a lot of attention these days… Hmm I wonder why!


Daniel Shevlin (cellist) has had a very varied and geographically spread-out theatrical career. He has appeared off-Broadway in The Sandbox written and directed by Edward Albee, had toured the U.S. and Asia in productions of Rent and Cabaret (Studio 54 version), and has worked regionally as both an actor and cellist in many theaters including the Arvada Center (CO), The Maltz-Jupiter Theatre (FL), Riverside Theatre (FL), and Mason Street Warehouse (MI) to name a few. A New Jersey native, Daniel recently moved back east to NYC after having a much needed and wonderful detour to Denver for almost two years.

Trevor Wadleigh (violist) is from Seattle and currently a member of The String Collective of New York. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, taught viola at the University of Puget Sound Community Music Community and is also a co-founder of the Puget Sound Animal Rescue.

Donna Drake, (director & co-writer) was in the original Broadway casts of A Chorus Line, Sophisticated Ladies, Woman of the Year, The Wind in the Willows, 5678-Dance, It’s so nice to be Civilized and the original production of The 1940’s Radio Hour. She has received an Emmy nomination for Dear Alex and Annie, 4 Drama Desk Nominations, A Mac Award Nomination and a Theatre World Award. She choreographed Catherine Zeta Jones for the American Film Institute Awards. She directed John Tartaglia’s Imaginocean which ran Off Broadway at New World Stages.

David Levinson (arranger) collaborated with Stacey Weingarten and Donna Drake on Les Enfants de Paris (world premiere NYMF 2011). David is also currently working on music and lyrics for Boys Lost, The Elliot’s, and Who Is Prester John? which are in development. Film scoring: The Waystation in the Stars (Brandon Morrissey dir.), The Missing Piece (Leila Manion dir.). Live theater scoring: The Boy Who Wanted To Be A Robot (written by Edward Einhorn, produced by Evolve co.). Music direction: Aida, Cabaret, Infancy. Concert Performances: Bringing Voices to Light – A Benefit Concert for Global Internet Access (The Laurie Beechman Theatre), Red Hot and New, The Music and Lyrics of David Levinson (Laurie Beechman Theatre), special guest at The After Party (The Laurie Beechman Theatre). Education: The New School, Manhattan School of Music Professional Musical Theater Workshop, New York City Opera Workshop.

Mark Cortale (co-writer & producer) in addition to Well-Strung, Mark manages and produces Jeffery Roberson aka Varla Jean Merman, Seth Rudetsky and Colleen Ballinger aka Miranda Sings. Mark worked as an opera singer for many years and is currently the Producing Artistic Director of The Art House in Provincetown. He founded the Broadway concert series there in 2011 with Seth Rudetsky and this summer he will be presenting Patti LuPone, Megan Mullally, Betty Buckley, Charles Busch, Faith Prince, Mario Cantone, Alice Ripley, Marilyn Maye and Judy Kuhn. Mark recently produced Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium starring Varla Jean Merman which is slated for a three week run in New York at the Marjorie S. Deane Little Theatre in the fall of 2012. He is currently producing Seth Rudetsky’s new reality that can be seen at . Mark also produced the feature film Varla Jean and the Mushroomheads which played the 2012 festival circuit with a screening most recently at Frameline in San Francisco.
