Mike Enders travels to Northern California for a new alternative gay travel segment. Landing at Wildwood Retreat Center in Guerneville, CA Mike shares the property with the 10th Annual Men’s Festival.
“Wildwood is a sanctuary created and sustained by gay men for healing, transformation and spiritual growth.”
I have traveled to Guerneville, CA a dozen times but mainly stayed near the main strip in town, or right on the Russian River. I had no idea that 5 miles up a squiggly road to the mountain top sat sanctuary for gay men, Wildwood Retreat Center. The center has been around and serving the community for decades but has now just caught my attention.
Heading up the mountain with the intention of capturing some great footage of the property, I had no idea that I would have my own personal transformation this week. The land covered in redwood trees holds magic in the palms of its hands. Speaking of trees, Wildwood Retreat Center “has an albino redwood on property! Only about 60 examples are known. An ‘albino’redwood is a redwood tree which is unable to produce chlorophyll, so has white needles instead of the normal green. To survive, it must join its roots to the roots of a normal redwood, usually the parent tree from whose base it has sprouted, from which it obtains nutrition as a parasite.”
I would definitely recommend Wildwood if you find yourself in the area and need some peace and quiet. The property is perfect for holding small retreats and gatherings where you can feel removed from the city yet just a quick drive from San Francisco.
