While visiting Oahu I meet up with Jack Law, the owner of Waikiki’s Famous Hula’s Bar. We chatted on the roof of the Waikiki Grand Hotel where Hula’s sits on the second floor with this insane backdrop of Diamond Head. It was super windy! Topics: Oahu’s gay life in the 70’s. Hula’s location change, Life Foundation, staying true to Hawaiian culture, Oahu Prides moves from June to October, “Jack Law Day”, first AIDS advocacy in the US, first needle exchange in the Country, existing outside of the closet, promoting Hawaii as gay tourist resort destination and more!
“This Town: Oahu Edition” — I travel to Oahu, Hawaii to seek out community influencers and individuals making a change in the LGBT community and the islands as a whole. Oahu Pride has been moved to October 22 this year in hopes to create 2 or 3 weeks of events to turn Oahu into a LGBT destination during the month of October.
