Mental Health Takes Center Stage at VMAs with Logic’s “1-800-273-8255” (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline)

Logic’s music isn’t something I usually post about but the message behind his song “1-800-273-8255,” the actual phone number for National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is worth some praise. It is interesting seeing blogs featuring his performance of his last night at the VMAs but never mentioning the words “suicide” of “suicide prevention.” For example Pitchfork, see there statement below. People don’t like to say those words because there not easy to digest and substitute “suicide” with “mental health.” And yes, I get it, suicide is largely a result of mental health, but I feel like it’s important also to use the word ‘suicide,’ directly, however of an ugly word it is. Regardless, well done Logic.

“Logic made an appearance tonight at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. He performed “1-800-273-8255,” the Everybody single, alongside an orchestra and his collaborators Alessia Cara and Khalid (both of whom performed earlier in the night). Toward the end of the performance, 50 attempt survivors and loss survivors from the Los Angeles area took the stage wearing shirts with the message “you are not alone.” Logic ended the performance with a sermon of sorts, thanking the VMAs for a platform to discuss mental health.” Pitchfork
