A short, two minute video, “NOW IS THE TIME: March on Springfield for Marriage Equality,” produced by Vicious Muse and Glam Tie Media, captures the emotion and determination of the masses gathered in Springfield, Illinois during the historic march and rally. The video shows the development of the day from the raising of the stage, inspiring musical performances, supportive words from politicians, calls for action from advocates and religious leaders, all the way to the taking to the streets as thousands marched on the state capitol. It also features a new song, “Brand New Fairy Tale,” by Chicago based musician Sami Grisafe, empowering us to write our own stories and create our own dreams.
The crowd stood in the rain for over four hours unified by a belief that love will prevail as inspiring music and speeches warmed hearts and minds. The call to action, “NOW IS THE TIME,” was chanted over and over encouraging us all to come together and stand on the side of love. As a testimony to inclusion, there were actually more “straight” allies than those who represented any letter in the LGBTQ acronym; professionals, politicians, and parents stood alongside high school and college students and church congregations from across Illinois.
With every great movement in history, music can be heard keeping pace and motivating the masses. The push for equal rights for all citizens, culminated in this state as a March for Marriage Equality in Springfield, IL on October 22, 2013, held this tradition in high esteem. Much like it’s civil rights predecessors, this March called together a vast array of talented musicians who took to the stage during the Rock the March event; prior to the people taking to the streets and demanding equal rights, and equal protections, under the law for all Illinois citizens.
The “NOW IS THE TIME” video is produced by Vicious Muse; directed by Vicious Muse and Glam Tie Media. Filmed by Jordan Lindley of Glam Tie Media. Original music by Sami Grisafe “Brand New Fairy Tale” (to be released in 2014) and backed by members of Chicago’s GIRLBAND – Jaclyn Rada, Sheela Reddy and Janet Cramer. Featuring Rock the March performers: Sami Grisafe, Stephen Leonard, Marcus Terell, Steve Grand, SONiA of disappear fear and the incomparable Honey West.
Many of the songs performed during the Rock the March concert speak to the fact that the majority of citizens support an equal marriage law being passed and encompass the compassion and virility of the movement. This new generation of equality is inspiring people to fight for the rights of all people, regardless of gender, creed, race, religion, orientation, age or any other limiting factor of times long passed. It’s time to raise the bar, and with it raise us all.
About the March
The March on Springfield for Marriage Equality took place on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, the scheduled first day of the fall veto session of the Illinois state legislature. The “March on Springfield” is part of a broad grassroots strategy to secure final passage of Senate Bill 10, the “Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act,” already approved by the Illinois Senate. Once adopted, Illinois will become the 15th state plus the District of Columbia, to treat all of its citizens equally under state marriage laws, and all married people in Illinois will be treated equally under federal law.
